PROFILE

Having worked predominantly with young people for 17 years in the UK, Caribbean and South Africa, Maurice has done nearly all kinds of youth work from detached and outreach, to special needs and young people in care, he’s spent 8 years focusing on sexual health.  He joined City & Hackney teaching Primary Care Trust in 2000 as a Development Worker for Young Men & Young Fathers within the young people’s service, catering to the sexual health and support needs of this group, and training local professionals on how to do the same.  His work in this role was recognised in 2002 where he was included in the Mayor’s of London’s role of honour awards.  He went on to become manager of the service for the next five years, and is responsible for a rapid expansion of the service and creating a service model that has been recognised directly by the Department of Health as a model of good practice.  He now focuses on providing training and consultancy to organisations and professionals that work with young people and/or health.  Maurice has a BA in Sociology and Educational Studies and a PGCE in Youth & Community Work.

Training

Maurice began formally designing and delivering training in 2003 for Hounslow Youth service.  In 2003 he designed and delivered a training program to Youth For Christ (YFC) in South Africa and took part in a conference there.  He has also delivered training and been the keynote speaker on a number of occasions at conferences for the NAZ project, of which he is also a board member.
In 2008 Maurice delivered a series of training sessions with NAHIP on implementing the assertiveness training program he designed and delivered in 2007.  He also recently worked with Steenburg Consultancy over 4 months as the lead facilitator, training all youth workers, youth offending team workers, social workers, probation officers, and police officers in Hackney on implementing a new strategic document on information sharing launched by Hackney Council.  He has designed and is currently delivering another national training programme on a new strategic document, the Knowledge, the Will and the Power (KWP), aimed at supporting organisations working to reduce the acquisition and transmission of HIV within the African community across the UK.

Most healhcare and youth workers are trained to a limited fashion. Our workshops bring a different dimension, which helps them to reach their young people by any means necessary, in a way that many of them wouldn’t have even thought - much less tried.
